Melanin Moments: What My Mom Taught Me About True Self-Care.

Melanin Moments: Wat mijn moeder mij leerde over echte selfcare.

Today is Mother's Day. A day that always feels special to me.

I am not a mother myself (yet), but I am a proud dog mom of my super sweet dog Shéa 🐾. And yet I have so much love and respect for the women around me.
Women who carry, feed, care, comfort, build… often in silence.
The largest group of clients that I have been working with for over 10 years are mothers.
And time and time again I see how they put themselves last, yet are the foundation of everything and everyone around them.

I am so grateful to God for my own mother.
Honestly, I couldn't have wished for a better one.

My mother is a strong Ghanaian woman. Full of softness, but also full of fire.
She is someone who always makes you feel welcome. Someone who doesn't just speak love, but really makes you feel it. She took care of me from a young age with a dedication that I only really began to understand as I grew older.

The smell of warm shea butter fills my memory of those moments to this day. Those rituals remained even as I grew older. I remember sometimes finding it uncomfortable, those endless massages with warm butter. But now I see: that was love.

My mother is tangible in her love. She literally shaped me with her hands.
As a child I often watched her hands. They did everything: cleaning, massaging, braiding hair, rubbing herbs, sticking plasters, catching laughter. Those hands were my first beauty school.

What she taught me about care is what I teach every client today.
How you shower. How you apply sunscreen. How you treat your body and skin with care.
Those simple things, which seemed so normal to us, form the foundation of Melplexion.

Because that is what my brand is all about. Loving your own skin.
Taking time to care for yourself, like our mothers did for us.
Without haste. Without judgement. With gentleness and pride.

My mother was my first model. For products. For treatments. For my vision.
She believed in me when there was nothing tangible. Only a dream, a desire and a notebook full of ideas.
She sat there with her eyes closed as I treated her skin as if it were sacred. And it was.

Mom, this edition is for you. For your hands, your heart, your hope. Thanks to you, I know what real care is. Not commercial, but cultural. Not superficial, but spiritual. With love, trust and prayer.

💛 To all moms today, in whatever form:
Biological mothers. Bonus mothers. Women who are mothers in care, in energy, in dedication. To mothers to be. And to those who long, miss or remember.
I see you. I honor you. And I thank you.

✨ Next week I will take you along on a journey through what it was like to build a brand from an entrepreneurial perspective that is not based on trends, but on tradition.

Keep learning, keep shining. Until the next Melanin Moment! 💛

Love,
Angela
