Melanin Moments #10 – I am not just a founder, I am also the story

Melanin Moments #10 – Ik ben niet alleen een founder, ik bén ook het verhaal

Sometimes a brand is not born out of ambition, but out of necessity.

✨ Welcome to edition 10 of Melanin Moments — and what a special one it is. Not only because we’re celebrating a milestone, but also because May is my birthday month. A perfect time to let you get a little closer. Because if you only know me as “the founder of Melplexion,” you only know a small part of who I am.

So… let’s really get started.
I am Angela. Almost 29 years old, born in Almere, with deep Ghanaian roots 🌍 from which I draw strength every day. Nowadays I live with my fiancé and our dog in the countryside. Nice and quiet, surrounded by greenery 🌿. Close to nature, and therefore also closer to myself. It helps me stay focused on what is really important: peace, focus and gratitude.

My love for beauty started as a little girl. I was fascinated by how women took care of themselves. Not in a hurry or vain, but with attention, softness and pride. A lick of oil on the skin, a comb through the hair, a touch of scent. Self-care as an act of love 💛.
That fascination grew with me.

When I started working as a makeup artist, I was hit hard by reality. The beauty world wasn’t built for everyone — especially women with melanin-rich skin. What was available was limited, misaligned, or downright harmful.
Foundations that turned gray. Ingredients that were supposed to “lighten” your skin (something I will soon dedicate a separate blog to, because this topic deserves more than one paragraph).
Products meant to align your skin with a standard of beauty that was simply never meant for us.
And that touched me. Deeply.

One day I was sitting across from a beautiful young woman. She told me that earlier that week she had literally been turned away from a well-known drugstore chain. Her skin was "too difficult", they could not help her. I deliberately do not mention the name of this chain, but it touched me deeply. The pain in her voice stuck with me.

As I began to apply her makeup, I looked at her skin. So rich in color, so full of potential. But also… visibly covered in a thick layer of Vaseline. She didn’t know any better. She thought this was what her skin needed. But it made her skin restless and heavy. And worse — it made her mentally insecure.

“I really want a LOT of foundation, please,” she said several times.
I felt resistance.
Not against her, but against the system that had taught her to cover up instead of care.
We started talking. In fact, we started arguing. And at that moment, something snapped inside me.
I felt her desire to be seen, but also her struggle to hide.

I knew: this can't go on like this.
I could no longer stand by and watch as my melanin-rich skin was ignored, misadvised or damaged over and over again, mentally and physically.
My passion for beauty, my love for melanin-rich skin and my knowledge as a business expert 📚 had to come together. Not in an idea. But in a movement.

I started searching. For the right guidance. For scientific substantiation. For African knowledge that has existed for generations, but is still undervalued. I started taking training courses. I started working with a biochemist. And slowly it started to take shape…

The Melanin Clinic , a safe place exclusively for melanin-rich skin.
Melplexion Skincare , pure, non-chemical products that allow my clients to truly understand and care for their skin at home.

I am a believer. And in that phase I received confirmation from the Lord again and again. This is your path. Not by chance. Not just like that. But guided.
It was time to bring skincare to another level.
No concessions. No masks. No excuses.

Melplexion is not a brand that makes “something for us”.
It is ours. Made with us in mind. From knowledge, love and conviction.

For every woman or man who's ever been told, “Your skin is too difficult” — this is for you.
And this… is just the beginning 💫.

Next week I will tell you about the step to entrepreneurship. And about the woman who influenced me the most: my mother.
Some foundations in life start with the people closest to you ❤️.

Keep learning, keep shining – until the next Melanin Moment! 💛
Love,
Angela
