Sometimes you just have to do it.
What if you stopped wondering if it was 'specific enough', 'big enough' or 'achievable enough'… and just went for it?
There is room for you. For your idea. For your voice.
And if you put your time, faith and energy into it? Really, the sky is the limit.
I am proof of that myself. Although at first it didn't exactly feel like a dream that took wing.
When I started Melplexion it was quite exciting.
The idea that as a beauty brand you only focus on melanin-rich skin?
Some people found that a bit difficult.
“Wouldn't it be better to just do something for all skin colors?”
Nope.
I knew from day one that specialization would be the key.
Because if you really understand something, you can really make a difference.
And that's what I wanted. To make a difference. Deeper than the surface. Deeper than a sale.
I wanted to come home to my work. And that only works if you stay true to what you feel.
I am a business economist, so I also knew: an idea alone is not enough.
You have to build, structure, measure, plan.
I took my business seriously from the beginning, as if it existed before it actually did.
Business class on faith and spreadsheets, so to speak.
And I also knew: I can't do this alone.
That is why, from the very beginning, I gathered people around me who brought expertise and heart.
What many people don't know is that Melplexion is actually a family business.
My brother is a quiet force behind the scenes. He doesn't want to be in the spotlight, but believe me, without him, a lot would fall apart.
From processes to strategy, he is the reason that everything behind the scenes runs as smoothly as our customers' skin.
And then my sister. She runs the clinic with such a firm hand that sometimes I have to laugh myself.
She is the voice of structure, of “no Angela, we are definitely not going to change that at the last minute”.
She guards the quality as if it were her own name on it. And it actually is. Because this is us.
I am so grateful that I get to build this with my family.
And no, that was not always self-evident.
When I told him I wanted to be an entrepreneur, my father looked at me with this look of:
“Hmm… so no doctor then?”
(Typical African parent vibe. If it's not a doctor, lawyer or engineer, it doesn't count 😂.)
But my mother saw through it right away.
She saw that fiery passion for beauty, that headstrong character, that I like to write my own rules.
And she always supported me, even when she was nervous.
The path was not without setbacks.
There were people who wanted to keep me small, who sowed doubts.
Sometimes it touched me deeply.
But my faith, my vision and the right people around me made the difference.
Every time I thought, “Maybe I should quit,” I reminded myself:
God does not put a dream in your heart to make you fail.
Today, when I look at what Melplexion has become, I know:
This is not about products. This is about liberation.
About coming home in your own skin.
About building something bigger than yourself.
And that's why I say to you:
If there is something alive in you, something that keeps coming back to your mind…
Give it space. Give it a chance.
It doesn't have to be perfect. It just has to be real.
✨ Next week I'll conclude this personal series with something very special.
Then I share what I've learned so far from my Melplexion community.
From the women and men who shared their stories with me, who trust, challenge and inspire me.
They are the soul of this brand and I can't wait to share that with you.
Keep learning, keep shining. Until the next Melanin Moment! 💛
Love,
Angela
